Cold Capping

Filling the Gaps for Chemo Patients
Because treatment is hard enough without having to worry about losing your hair.
The Give All Project is helping patients beginning chemotherapy access cold capping, a non-invasive treatment designed to help reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss.
For many patients, hair loss can be one of the most visible and emotionally difficult side effects of treatment. Cold capping offers another option—helping patients maintain more of their hair while they focus on what matters most: their health, their treatment, and their journey forward.
Cold capping has been studied in clinical research conducted by leading medical institutions, including (Logos are available on the Polar site or just list them out): Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Cleveland Clinic, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and UCLA Health.
Helping Patients Keep More of What Makes Them Feel Like Themselves
The Give All Project believes no patient should have to navigate the financial and emotional gaps that can come with a cancer diagnosis alone. If we can help a patient keep more of their hair—and lose one more worry along the way—we've made a difference.
This proven, non-invasive treatment has an 80%* success rate in helping reduce hair loss during certain cancer treatments, and is making a meaningful difference for people navigating chemo during their cancer journey.
How It Works
The cold temperature of the cap constricts the blood vessel beneath the skin of the scalp, preventing the chemotherapy medicine from reaching the hair follicles. This process is referred to as vasoconstriction. The cold also slows down the hair follicle metabolism, making the hair cells dormant or less active, further preventing the absorption of chemotherapeutic drugs. During chemotherapy treatment, the patient wears the cap for:
- 1 hr prior to treatment
- Throughout the entire treatment
- 3 hrs after treatment
Polar Cold Caps must be changed every 30 minutes during this entire process to ensure the scalp remains cold.
Premedication infusion is not considered chemotherapy and caps can be worn during this time.
